Bratislava Castle

This dominant feature of the city towers over the city and the surface of the Danube, its characteristic silhouette is reminiscent of an overturned table. You can reach it by taking the streets and alleys of the castle settlement, where there are many picturesque nooks with splendid manor houses. Since 2008, Bratislava Castle is in reconstruction.


Devín Castle

This mighty fortress above the confluence of the rivers Morava and Danube is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Slovakia. The oldest traces of settlement date back to 5000 BC. At the times of the Roman Empire, Devin was an important military station and, at the times of the Greater Moravian Empire, the castle was a significant boundary fortress as well as one of political and administration centres.

Michael’s Tower
St. Michael’s Bridge is a sort of entrance to the pedestrian zone, which leads over the former castle moat directly to Michael’s Tower. Here you will find a zero kilometer landmark from which you can calculate the distance from Bratislava to other world metropolises.

Sculptures on the Promenade

While strolling along the promenade, you will run into Napoleon leaning up against a bench on the Main Square, right around the corner you will be greeted by legendary Bratislava cavalier Schöner Nazi and world famous Čumil (the Gaper) will smile at you from the sewer. There are many such statues located in the pedestrian zone and they have become a favorite tourist attraction and are sure to enliven your stroll.


Slovak National Theatre

The dominant feature of Hviezdoslavovo Square is the Slovak National Theater building, in which the opera is located. Right next door, the majestic Hotel Carlton stands in its glory, which after many years of disrepair awaited reconstruction and today boasts the most prestigious clientele.

Presidential Palace and Grassalkovich Gardens

The Garden Palace of Count Grassalkovich is located on the largest intersection in Old Town and is the seat of the president of the Slovak Republic. It is surrounded by the magnificent Grassalkovich Gardens, which are open to the public. Presidents who have visited Bratislava have planted an interesting alley of trees here. The palace is open only during occasions of Open House, so if you happen to have this chance, be sure not to miss it.


Primatial Palace

The Primatial Palace is located on Primatial Square, and many consider this to be the most beautiful palace in all Bratislava. The majority of the most important municipal offices are also located in this square.




St. Martin's Cathedral

St. Martin's Cathedral was once a significant coronation church of Hungarian kings and queens.Within 1563 – 1830, there were crowned 11 Hungarian Kings and 8 royal wives.
The three-nave The construction of the cathedral began in the 13th century in the Romanesque style and from 1302 it served as a city cathedral. Tower of the church was constructed simultaneously with 3 naves of the church, while it was integral part of city walls serving to defend the town. Its height is 85 m and there is a gilded pillow of dimensions 2 m x 2 m on the top, while a 1 m high copy of the Hungarian royal crown weighing 300 kg is placed on it. Beethoven‘s Missa Solemnis was played for the first time in this church.


Little Blue Church

Another unique work is St. Elizabeth's Church, known by the familiar name of Little Blue Church. This is a magnificent art nouveau structure on Bezruova Street; other interesting structures from this period can be found in the vicinity.




Bratislava's oldest church

The Church of the Franciscans on Františkánske námestie was consecrated in the year 1297 in the presence of King Ondrej III. Fires and earthquakes have damaged the church more than once, however. Only the chancel of the church is preserved in its original form. But don't go away without a visit to the interesting chapel of St. John from the second half of the 14th century.

The Main Square<

The Main Square underwent expansive reconstruction in the early 1990's and the character of a medieval town was restored here. The Fountain of Maximilian II is located in the center of the square, known to Bratislavans as Roland's Fountain. This name was earned by the legend that says that once per year, at midnight, the statue of Sir Roland turns around its axis – however, this phenomenon can only be seen by true virgins.


Hviezdoslavovo square

Hviezdoslavovo square is one of the best-known squares in Bratislava. It is located in the Old Town, between the Nový Most (New Bridge) and the Slovak National Theatre. The square is named after Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, important Slovak poet. The square is primarily a pedestrian zone with lots of green, fountains running along the square, cafés, restaurants and with podium for cultural events.

Ventúrska Street

The promenade continues along the oldest streets in Bratislava is Ventúrska street. Wealthy families once resided here, which is demonstrated by the many palaces on both sides of the street. The first humanistic university in Hungary is also located here – Academia Istropolitana – which was established in 1465.


An inverted pyramid

If it is true that razor blades get sharper in pyramids, it would be interesting to see what would happen to your razor blade in the Slovak Radio building on Mýtna Ulica, which constructed in the form of 61 metre high inverted pyramid.

The SNP Bridge has become another of the famous symbols of Bratislava – known as the New Bridge by Bratislavans. This controversial structure, for which the city sacrificed part of the original castle settlement, is the seventh largest suspended bridge in the world and the UFO Café at the top of the bridge was reconstructed and opened just this June. You can reach the café by climbing up 430 steps or by the express elevator. The view from the top is simply unique.
